How to convert images to AVIF

Why AVIF?

AVIF is based on the AV1 video codec. At the same visual quality, AVIF files are often around 50% smaller than JPEG and 20–30% smaller than WebP, and they support transparency and HDR.

All current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari support AVIF.

Encoding takes longer

AVIF compression is CPU-intensive: expect roughly 1–5 seconds per image depending on size and your device. Asset Compressor encodes several images in parallel, but for folders with thousands of photos, WebP is much faster.

AVIF quality numbers are not the same as JPEG quality: 55–65 already looks excellent for most photos.

Using AVIF on your website

Most image-heavy pages load noticeably faster when their photos are served as AVIF. Content systems increasingly accept AVIF uploads directly; for hand-written HTML, list the AVIF first in a picture element, then a WebP or JPEG fallback for the few browsers that still lack support.

AVIF also supports transparency, so it can replace PNG for logos and product cut-outs where file size matters – check the result in the comparison slider first, since very fine lines can soften at low quality.

Frequently asked questions

Is AVIF better than WebP?

For file size, usually yes. WebP encodes much faster and is supported by more editing software, so it remains a great default. Try both and compare sizes in the results.

Why is AVIF conversion slow?

AVIF squeezes out extra savings with heavy computation. It all happens on your own device, so speed depends on your CPU.

Can I use AVIF on my website?

Yes. Every current major browser displays AVIF. For older browsers, serve it inside a picture element with a WebP or JPEG fallback.

Does AVIF keep transparency?

Yes. Transparent PNG and WebP images stay transparent when converted to AVIF.

Can Windows and macOS open AVIF files?

Current versions of Windows 11 and macOS can preview AVIF, and all major browsers display it. Some older photo editors can’t open AVIF yet, so keep your originals for editing.
