How to remove a background from an image

How in-browser AI background removal works

Asset Compressor runs an image-segmentation neural network directly in your browser, using your graphics card through WebGPU when available and WebAssembly otherwise. The model predicts, for every pixel, how likely it is to belong to the foreground, which produces a soft mask with natural edges.

The mask is then applied to your original photo at full resolution. Because nothing is sent to a server, there is no upload wait, no queue and no copy of your photo on anyone else’s computer.

Perfect for product photos, portraits and social media

Online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay and Etsy favour product photos on a pure white background. Choose the white background, pick JPEG, and your listing photos are ready. For profile pictures and thumbnails, a transparent PNG lets you place the subject on any design.

The blur option keeps the original scene but softens it, like a portrait mode photo – great for making the subject stand out.

Getting the cleanest cut-out

The AI works best when the subject is clearly separated from the background by color, light or focus. Busy scenes with several people or objects may keep extra parts. Use the Edges setting to adjust: Soft keeps fine hair and fur, Crisp gives clean outlines for products and logos.

The first run downloads the AI model (about 44 MB) and stores it in your browser, so later photos start almost instantly.

Frequently asked questions

Are my photos uploaded to an AI server?

No. The AI model runs inside your browser via WebGPU or WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your computer or phone. Only the model itself is downloaded, once.

Is it really free? Is there a watermark or HD paywall?

It’s free with no watermark, no credits and no daily limit. Downloads keep your photo’s full resolution (very large photos are capped at about 16 megapixels so every browser can handle them).

Why does the first image take longer?

The AI model has to download once (about 44 MB). After that it is cached in your browser, and each new photo usually takes just a few seconds – faster on computers with a modern graphics card.

Can I replace the background with white or another color?

Yes. Choose Color and pick white, any preset or a custom color. You can also blur the original background instead.

Which formats can I download?

PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPEG and AVIF are also available; JPEG fills transparent areas with white. You can set the quality, a maximum file size and maximum dimensions.
