How to resize a video

Resolution versus aspect ratio

Resolution is the number of pixels (1920×1080, 1280×720…); aspect ratio is the shape of the frame (16:9, 9:16, 1:1). Lowering the resolution keeps the shape and makes the file smaller. Changing the aspect ratio means either adding bars around the video or cropping part of it away.

Resolution presets never enlarge a video. Exact frame sizes do scale the video to fill the frame you ask for, which is what social networks expect.

Video sizes for social media

Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts use vertical 9:16 video at 1080×1920. Instagram feed posts look best at 1:1 (1080×1080) or 4:5 (1080×1350). YouTube, X and LinkedIn videos are typically landscape 16:9 at 1920×1080.

Uploading at exactly the size a platform expects avoids surprise cropping and lets you decide what stays in the frame.

Fit or fill?

Fit keeps the whole picture and adds black bars where the shapes differ – best when nothing may be cut off, like slides or text. Fill scales the video until the frame is covered and trims the overflowing edges from the centre – best for people and scenery where the subject is in the middle.

Frequently asked questions

Does resizing make the file smaller?

Yes, usually a lot. 720p has less than half the pixels of 1080p, so the resized video needs far less data at the same quality.

Will a small video be upscaled?

Resolution presets never enlarge a video. Exact frame sizes (for example 1080×1920) do scale the video to that size, so a small clip is enlarged to fill the frame.

How do I make a landscape video vertical for TikTok or Reels?

Choose the 9:16 Vertical preset, then pick Fill to crop the sides and keep the centre, or Fit to keep the whole frame with bars above and below.

Can I rotate a video?

Videos are automatically shown the right way up based on the orientation your phone recorded. Manual rotation isn’t available yet.
